Optional — for Bluetooth sign-in, eID card sign-in, and silent cross-tab re-login. QR sign-in needs nothing and works on every browser.
On a Chromium browser the extension runs with full features — Bluetooth, eID card reader, and silent re-login. It holds no keys; your phone stays the only key-holder. Two minutes:
Unzip the download — you'll get a hesskey-extension folder. Keep it somewhere permanent (the browser loads it from this location).
Open chrome://extensions (or edge://extensions / brave://extensions).
Turn on Developer mode (toggle, top-right).
Click Load unpacked and select the hesskey-extension folder.
Done — pin it, then reload this Hesskey tab. Bluetooth, eID card, and silent sign-in light up.
Coming to the Chrome Web Store. A one-click "Add to Chrome" is on the way; the extension's identity is pinned, so it keeps the same ID however you install it.
Heads-up:Bluetooth and eID-card sign-in need a Chromium browser — they use Web Bluetooth and an offscreen worker, which Firefox doesn't implement. The Firefox build gives you the cloud-relay / light-client sign-in and silent re-login. For Bluetooth or card sign-in, use Chrome/Edge/Brave — or just use QR sign-in (no extension, works in Firefox).

The build currently published here is out of date and cannot reach the Hesskey network, so it
will not sign you in. An updated build is on its way; this page will carry it again as soon as
it ships.

Use QR sign-in — it needs no extension and works in
Firefox now. For Bluetooth or eID-card sign-in, use a Chromium browser (Chrome / Edge / Brave).
If you already loaded the Firefox add-on
Please remove it and re-install once the updated build is
published. It was loaded as a temporary add-on, so simply restarting Firefox clears it; to
remove it now, open about:addons → Extensions → Hesskey
Identity → Remove. Your identity lives on your phone, so nothing is lost
by removing it.
Permanent install needs a Mozilla-signed build (addons.mozilla.org). A signed .xpi for one-click install is on the way; the developer Load Temporary Add-on route returns here alongside the updated build.
Heads-up:Bluetooth and eID-card sign-in don't work in Safari (no Web Bluetooth, no offscreen worker, no native messaging). Safari also requires a browser extension to ship inside a small Mac app. For everyday use on Safari, use QR sign-in — no extension, works natively.

Get Hesskey Identity for macOS (App Store link coming; for now, build the bundled Xcode project — see the dev note below).
Open the app once, then go to Safari → Settings → Extensions and tick Hesskey Identity.
If it's an unsigned/dev build: Safari → Settings → Advanced → Show features for web developers, then Develop → Allow Unsigned Extensions.
Reload this Hesskey tab.
Dev build: the Safari Web Extension is generated with Apple's converter into an Xcode project (macOS + iOS targets). Open it in Xcode and build with your signing team; distribution needs notarization or the App Store.
Signing in with your eID card? You'll also need the small desktop
bridge that talks to your card reader (Chromium only) — the card sign-in screen offers a one-click
installer (Windows .msi ·
macOS .pkg).
The PIN is always entered in the government software, never in the browser.
Don't want to install anything? Use the QR option on the
start screen — your phone scans the code and approves. No extension, any browser.
